Cats really like sleeping, and an average of 16 hours of sleep per day places them high on the napping champion list. And they love sleeping so much that they can fall asleep almost anywhere. Scratch that – they can fall asleep absolutely anywhere.
They are not choosy, so flowerpots, tissue boxes, wine glasses, or laundry racks all look like a bed to them. We have collected some of the funniest pictures of cats sleeping. I believe only images we are missing are of cats sleeping in a volcano, or the Moon. But that’s because there was no one around to take a photo, not because it didn’t happen.
Molly DeVoss, a certified cat training and behavior consultant, said that domestic cats sleep on average from 16 to 20 hours a day, but it’s a part of their ambush tactic. “This strategy consists of stalk, chase, pounce, catch and kill. Cats will eat about 10 small meals throughout a day, which equates to around six cumulative hours of daily hunting; they are sleeping to refuel their energy for the hunt.” However, indoor-only cats may possibly be snoozing out of boredom.
Some cats sleep as a defense mechanism to help them handle stressful situations. Sometimes, sleeping during the day may be a sign of getting old. DeVoss recommends keeping an eye on your pet and being conscious of the signs of fatigue that would indicate it’s time to visit a veterinarian.
Humans prefer beds, so some places and positions in which cats are found sleeping look rather silly. Cat behavior specialist Rita Reimers says that cats can sleep practically anywhere. Among other spots, they love “sunspots, your bed, or tucking away in little quiet corners and cubbyholes.” Their favorite spots are warm places like a warm basket of laundry that just came out of the dryer.
