The Incredible Story of a Town Built Just for Cats

No matter where you live in the world, chances are you're quite aware of a homeless animal issue. Wherever you go, it seems as though there are always strays. Attempts to combat homeless pets, especially cats and dogs, has been a long road with massive campaigns encouraging owners to spay and neuter their pets without hesitation but in some beautiful places, solutions have been more much creative and inspiring.

The northern province of Samsun, Turkey is just one of those incredible places. Mostly referred to as "Cat Town," this cat sanctuary is one incredible story.  The unique facility was founded within a 10,000-kilometer forest area, perfectly located within a municipal animal shelter. The facility took around 2 years to build, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality and presently provides a safe environment filled with ideal amenities for an amazing 50 cats, who were once homeless without this safe haven.

So, how do cats make their way from homeless in the streets of Turkey to living a comfortable and cared for lifestyle in "Cat Town?"

It all starts with the animal shelter rescuing stray and homeless cats from the streets and bringing them in to spay and neuter them. One of the best ways to combat a growing community of homeless animals is to make sure that spaying and neutering is a top priority. Once the procedure is finished the cats are brought into the community of "Cat Town" where they get to live comfortably. Despite what one may think about injured cats or cats fighting illnesses, the facility does not discriminate, even taking in "special needs" kitties and provides care from a "resident vet."

Resident vet and facility manager, Hüseyin Aydin, properly handles and treats any sickly cats and makes sure they are completely ready to enter the community before they get to mingle with the other cats.

Aydin likens the facility and shelter to more of a "5 Star Cat Hotel" than a sanctuary or cat town and it's not hard to see why. Absolutely anything these sweet cats could ever need or want in an entire lifetime is provided for with happiness and eagerness by the facility. Health, companionship, shelter, you  name it and these cats get it!

The town is fully equipped with a "series" of bridges for climbing, walking tracks for entertainment, and bungalows for optimal comfort in shelter. In fact there are enough bungalow options that each cat can decide if it wants to live solo or alongside other cats.

Aydin has made it clear that the primary objective of this unique compound is so that these cats can live out happy and healthy lives no matter what and that while it currently houses an impressive 50 felines there is no reason and nothing stopping them from expanding. In fact, they plan to house more cats in the future! How inspiring!
