Xafi and Auri: The Russian Blue Kitties With Incredibly Mesmerizing Eyes

If you've never seen a Russian Blue cat before, you're really in for a treat. But even if you are familiar with the stunning, gorgeous breed, you're still in for a treat! Xafi and Auri are a pair of Russian Blues have "ocean eyes, silver fur, and golden hearts."

The naturally occurring breed, notorious for their short, dense coat are also sometimes called Archangel Blues. According to Wikipedia: "Russian Blues are plush short-haired,cute, shimmering pale blue-gray cats with emerald green eyes. Guard hairs are distinctly silver-tipped giving the cat a silvery sheen or lustrous appearance." This definitely rings true for Xafi and Auri, but they're not just beautiful cats. They're packed with purr-sonality, too! Which is probably why they're popularity is growing quickly on Instagram!

Xafi and Auri's humans told us that Xafi turned 3-years old in April of 2019, and Auri will turn 3-years old in September of 2019.

According to their website: Both Auri and Xafi are so-called "American Type" Russian Blue Cats.

The stars of the show, the duo also live with their little brother. Their humans told us they, "love their little brother @errol.the.cat who is the mischief maker of the trio and keeps the girls on their toes (paws?)."

Although we know they're not twin sisters, they do frequently get mistaken as such according to their humans Annaken and Tim.

The UK-based paw-rents told Bored Panda the trick to telling the cats apart:

Auri has a rounder face, wider ears, and slightly darker fur. Xafi has a more angular face with slightly taller ears. Their “Meow” is also distinctly different as is the way they both move and act. Auri also looks a lot more muscular and toned even though they are exactly the same weight: 3.5kg.

However, that's not all the humans use to tell their spunky, beautiful cats apart. Their purr-sonalities are far from the same.

Xafi is the more affectionate of the two, while Auri is the more mischievous of the two. In fact, Auri's nickname is "Klepto Cat," due to her inclination to steal everything in sight!

Anneken told Bored Panda:

Xafi is human-oriented where Auri is independent. Auri is athletic where Xafi is clumsy. Xafi is loudly demanding when wanting cuddles whereas Auri asks in a very gentle and quiet way to get a fuss. But both are just the most loving and sweet girls I’ve ever known.

We also asked Xafi and Auri's humans what the naughtiest thing they'd ever done was:

Xafi has a habit of using our legs as scratching posts (a sign of affection from her). We got used to it, but didn’t factor in that she would do this to her cat-sitter too…who was wearing tights…
Auri is obsessed with paper towels and routinely steals them from the kitchen counter to shred them.

According to their website:

In general Russian Blue Cats are known for their gentle, intelligent and independent nature. They are avid shoulder riders and many learn to play fetch like a puppy. Instead of meowing they often chirp, but are generally rather quiet cats.

Naturally, each of the cats has their own model purr-sonality, too. Anneken said:

It took me quite a while to develop the skills to photograph cats. Capturing photos of the two together is very challenging. We use treats and toys to try and get them to pose and look into the camera. I do less and less of those types of photos now – I prefer capturing them in their natural environment now just doing their cat-things

Xafi and Auri are sisters by blood but they are not from the same litter. When we asked their humans how they came to their forever homes, we were told:

We met both of them at their breeder. We actually were supposed to adopt a different kitten to Xafi, but fell in love when we met her. She chose us!

On their website, Anneken answers a frequently asked question. What do their names mean?

Xafi: Xafi is short for Xafira. She was born into "Litter X" (Breeders often use letters to distinguish between litters). We wanted to honour that letter and chose Xafira because one of the meanings of the name was "Sapphire", a blew gem stone which fit with her extremely light blue kitten coat.
Auri: Auri's name was also chosen because of the letter assigned to her Litter (A) and because Auri is a character in the books by Patrick Rothfuss. Especially the book "The slow regard of silent things" which is about the character Auri (without naming her) is a favourite in our house. If you do find the time, his books are well worth reading and when you meet Auri in them you will see the name is a perfect fit.

Although it's been a few years into their journey, Xafi and Auri get along splendidly:

When Auri was still small they cuddled daily and groomed each other. Now that Auri is bigger they like their own space, but still cuddle daily and groom each other and generally spend a lot of time together.
Xafi loves small soft balls. She brings them to us to play fetch with her. She announces her desire to play with a long singing meow and dropping the ball at our feet.

The cats "go nuts" for their occasional treat: tuna. But the summer is when they really get spoiled enjoying "Catsicles, which are ice cubes with powdered natural freeze-dried chicken treats. We make these ourselves and the girls LOVE them."

Auri loves crinkle balls and generally toys that make a noise when she picks them up and carries them around to play with them.

Xafi and Auri also enjoy outdoor time:

Being so close to lovely areas of natural beauty gives us lots of opportunities to take the girls to remote places and just enjoy a sunny afternoon in nature.

Anneken largely manages Xafi and Auri's Instagram, while Tim, a videographer largely manages their brother's Instagram.

However, they share the same goal of, “capturing their unique personas through the lens." With each account captivating well over 100,000 followers, I'd say Anneken and Tim are definitely doing something right, even if a large part of that formula are 3 stunning cats.

They are the most gentle and cuddly cats, very sweet to each other and sleeping on our bed every night.

Honestly, we look forward to many more years of fabulous feline photos.
